Correction to blog: UN Statement on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

We have received several calls from people questioning the quote that I attribute to pope Francis in my last blog.

We have received several calls from people questioning the quote that I attribute to pope Francis in my last blog.

Although I found this quote referenced in two separate places, Snopes has concluded that the quote is false. So I am happy to retract the quote which really was not the point of my blog.

Rather the blog was lifting up the problem of religious and political opposition to the UN Statement on Violence Against Women, including voices from the Vatican.

In spite of these voices, the statement was approved with some important, strong provisions.

I will happily await current statements from the new pope affirming the human rights of women, specifically the right to live free from violence and fear.
