The Time to Act is Now!

Mar 19, 2012 — Categories: ,

If you care about violence against women, you should care about the Violence Against Women Act. It's up for renewal in the U.S. Congress. And for the first time in its history, it's becoming partisan. Sen. Orin Hatch (R) and Sen. Joe Biden (D) were the first co-sponsors. And every renewal since has been with strong bipartisan support. Until now.

Until now.

The Violence Against Women Act is one piece of federal legislation that works.  We need federal support for programs that serve victims, hold abusers accountable, and change institutions to do both more effectively.  It's working and we need it to continue.

So regardless of your partisan preference, call your Senator now.  And then get ready to call your Representative. The time to act is NOW for the Senate vote on VAWA!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) plans to bring VAWA, S. 1925, to the Senate Floor this week! Female senators spoke in support of VAWA on the Senate floor last week and you can watch them in action here or Click on Video Library and click on Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act. We still need everyone who cares about VAWA to call their senators and urge them to vote YES on VAWA!

Action:  Call both of your Senators D.C. offices today and ask them vote YES on VAWA:

I urge Senator _____ to support the Violence Against Women Act and vote YES on S. 1925 AS IS. A vote for VAWA is a vote for women and for all victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Check the VAWA website for fact sheets, press coverage, support letters and updates. Check out and “like” the Facebook page where you can find a toolkit and other action and information items.

Thank you.
