Ramadan Kareem!

As Ramadan and the period of fasting draws to a close, Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19.

As Ramadan and the period of fasting draws to a close, Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19. This very important holiday is the occasion for dressing up and attending early prayers followed by a great feast of special foods with friends and family. It is a time of reconciliation when old wrongs are forgiven and a special time of giving to the poor.  Gifts are exchanged and children are given presents.  This is a time of joyful celebration in praise of God and giving thanks.

This year during Ramadan, FaithTrust Institute was fortunate to welcome Salma Abugideiri from Peaceful Families Project and Imam Khalid Latif who is the Chaplain at New York University and Director of the Islamic Center to our August Roundtable.  We asked them to reflect on the meaning of Ramadan in relation to their efforts to address violence against women in the community.

Each of them highlighted the importance of family in Islam and the family values of respect, support, and peace.  Ramadan is a time when healthy family relationships are lifted up and celebrated in addition to personal reflection, thanksgiving, fasting and acts of charity.  It is also a time which encourages and strengthens Muslims in their efforts to bring peace to families and to the world.

At this particular holy time, we at FaithTrust Institute give thanks for our colleagues from many faiths who share a commitment to ending violence in our homes and bringing justice and peace to heal the brokenness that violence has created.
