Spring Break {File Under: Things We Tend To Take For Granted}
In the northern hemisphere, this is the season of spring. Each year I try to spend a week in the Smokey Mountains because spring here is an event that unfolds each day before our eyes. Warm days and cool nights coax the sprouts from the ground and the buds from the trees. Wild violets cover the ground, tender fiddle heads of ferns unfold, the redbuds are just ready to burst into purple, a faint touch of green covers the mountainside.

Wild violets cover the ground, tender fiddle heads of ferns unfold, the redbuds are just ready to burst into purple, a faint touch of green covers the mountainside. The blue jay is busy with its nest just outside the kitchen window. Baby eagles are hatching in Decorah, Iowa. The boys of summer are pitching and hitting. And the snow is melting in Boston! |
Forgive me if I take a moment’s respite from the news cycle to ponder the fragile wonder of spring. For Christians, this is Holy Week leading up to Good Friday and Easter when we remember the execution of Jesus by the Roman state and his resurrection. In this season, we affirm the Gospel message that death does not win, oppression does not win, cruelty does not win, cold indifference does not win, injustice does not win. |
In spite of all that we do to each other and to the earth, life wins. Love and justice win. Healing wins. Spring comes and we get a chance to begin again.
