Debbie Friedman, remarkable Jewish songwriter and singer, has died.

Debbie wrote “Save A Life,” the theme of FaithTrust Institute’s DVD on domestic violence in the Jewish community.

No more darkness, no more hiding,
No more crying, no more lies.
Looking for the way back home again.
Save a life and you will save the world.
. . . Take my hand; we’ll build the world together.
Save a life and you will save the world.

It was the perfect song to frame this first DVD to examine domestic violence from a Jewish perspective. We also used it for the theme of our FaithTrust Institute video (hear Debbie's voice). She was very generous in allowing us to use it. I liked the song so much that I began to explore her other songs and discovered an amazing repertoire of spiritual music that invited everyone in. She has had a huge impact on Reform Judaism, particularly according to one commentator, “in reminding us how to sing.”

We mourn the loss of this woman of deep faith whose music inspired so many within Judaism and beyond. Her songs will be a living legacy, but her voice and spirit will be much missed by many.

Visit Debbie's website for a reflection on her music.
