Description: This six week, online course with FaithTrust Institute and the Center for Progressive Renewal will equip clergy to understand the importance of healthy boundaries in ministry and to critically discern the complexities of boundaries in pastoral relationships.

Course Overview: Through the coursework which requires two texts and a workbook, forum topic discussion, weekly writing assignments, DVD curriculum and lectures, you will gain and share knowledge and resources needed to understand the fundamentals and best practices around healthy and appropriate boundaries in the clergy/congregant or spiritual teacher/student relationship; the impact of appropriate vs. inappropriate boundaries in promoting effective ministry; and guidelines for developing appropriate boundaries and necessary self-care strategies.

  • Establish a theological foundation for an understanding of healthy boundaries
  • Understand the importance of an awareness of power and vulnerability within pastoral/teaching relationships
  • Examine dating, friendships and dual relationships and the challenges therein
  • Examine transference and touch boundaries in pastoral/teaching relationships
  • Look critically at boundary issues in use of internet technology in faith communities
  • Consider the importance of self-care and peer support as preventive measures

All participants who complete the course and pass the final assignment will receive a certificate of course completion and two C.E.U.credits from the Pacific School of Religion. The content of this course is intended to fulfill boundary training requirements for the United Church of Christ. Session III: Dating, Friendships and Dual Relationships
Session IV: Transference and Touch Boundaries
Session V: Social Networking and Healthy Boundaries
Session VI: Personal Needs and Self Care
