Hymn for Ending Intimate Partner Violence

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette, one of the great contemporary hymn writers, has written a hymn called God of Love, We’ve Heard the Teaching reflecting her decades-long ministry to address the needs of survivors of violence. Gillette has made the hymn available for free to faith communities at www.carolynshymns.com/god_of_love_weve_heard_the_teaching.html

God of Love, We’ve Heard the Teaching was inspired by a two-day training for faith communities provided by FaithTrust Institute, and sponsored through a grant from InFaith Community Foundation. The hymn considers some of the troublesome arguments, including ones based on Ephesians, that are used to convince women to stay in abusive situations; it celebrates God's love for every person, and God's desire for people to live free from violence and know peace, justice, safety and love in their lives and relationships.

Well known for addressing the most pressing and heart-breaking tragedies, Carolyn Winfrey Gillette was featured recently in The New Yorker for her hymn “They Met to Read the Bible,” written in response to the murder of nine people in Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Church in 2015.

FaithTrust Institute is grateful for this inspired gift, and we hope you will share it with your faith community.
