In Memoriam: Dr. Catherine Clark Kroeger (1925–2011)

We have lost another friend and colleague this week.

We have lost another friend and colleague this week. Dr. Catherine Clark Kroeger’s unexpected passing leaves a huge gap in the work of faith communities addressing domestic violence, especially among evangelical Christians. Catherine spent most of her life as a biblical scholar, but was not limited to the ivory tower. She helped to found Christians for Biblical Equality and founded Peace and Safety in the Christian Home. Both of these national organizations have helped create space in the real world of clergy and laity in Christian churches to carefully explore the biblical mandates for equality, justice, and safety in family relationships. The depth of her biblical scholarship was admired by many, but she always made sure that her work was accessible to a lay audience.

Her work became the foundation for permanently removing any biblical excuses for the abuse of women and children. Catherine rebuffed every attempt to misuse scripture to justify harm in the family.

At eighty-five years old, she was still remarkably active and generous with her time and energy, planning a national conference for later this year and still traveling, lecturing, and teaching. Catherine touched the lives of so many individuals. We give thanks for her life, her work, and her witness among us. We redouble our efforts to carry forward all that we learned from her.
