Pastors often the first line of defense

By Sara Arthurs, TheCourier.com Staff Writer

A pastor may be the first person a victim of domestic violence confides in, but the pastor may also feel unsure how to handle such a confidence. A workshop scheduled for Oct. 27 on "Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence" aims to address this.

The workshop, part of Blanchard Valley Health System's spiritual care education series, is co-sponsored by Open Arms Domestic Violence and Ripe Crisis Services and Century Health. It's funded by the spiritual care endowment, an endowed fund of the Blanchard Valley Health Foundation, made possible by the Great Lakes Conference of the Churches of God

....

The Rev. Dr. Sharon Ellis Davis of Chicago, who will be one of the speakers at the workshop, is a United Church of Christ pastor and trainer for the Faith Trust Institute and adjunct professor at McCormick Theological Seminary. She said the goal is to have an in-depth conversation about how to respond in domestic violence situations to both the victim -- she uses the term "victim survivor" -- and the abuser.
