Joy Lacanienta - Faith and Culture: Domestic Violence in Pacific Islander/Asian American - Recorded

— Categories: ,

Stereotypes of cultures and faiths, while they exist, often serve to only impede women's empowerment, particularly from South Asian cultures. Understanding the basic tenets of faith traditions among South Asians allow advocates to utilize a South Asian survivor's faith as a resource rather than a roadblock.

Many Pacific Islander and Asian American victims of domestic violence face particular challenges in finding safety for themselves and their children. If they are immigrants or if English is a second language, these challenges are even greater. How can we help insure that their faith communities are resources and not roadblocks for them? This recorded webinar will:

  • Discuss the particular experience of Pacific Islander and Asian American women who experience domestic violence
  • Lift up the important roles that culture and faith play in responding to domestic violence in families
  • Highlight the significant faith issues faced by Pacific Islander and Asian American survivors of domestic violence
  • Equip religious leaders to become a resource to support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable
  • Encourage collaboration with community based resources
  • Encourage the faith community to become a safe place for victims of domestic violence to seek support
