What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

“As gun rights advocates push to legalize firearms on college campuses, an argument is taking shape: Arming female students will help reduce sexual assaults.” I will tell you exactly what will go wrong. I will tell you exactly what will go wrong. Here’s how it will go. Undergrad Sally is given a handgun by her parents on her birthday. Sally attends an abbreviated gun safety class which includes target practice. Sally now carries her gun in her backpack on campus. She says she feels safer.  Two possible scenarios:

  1. Sally goes to an off campus party but does not take her backpack. She is sexually assaulted by her date but has no gun to supposedly defend herself.
  2. Sally goes to an off campus party with her backpack. Her date attacks her. They have both been drinking. She is able to get to her gun and proceeds to shoot her date. He dies. Sally is arrested and charged with third degree murder. Her plea of self-defense is not successful. She is convicted and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

On the flip side, now predators and stalkers will be able to carry guns on campus which only increases their ability to carry out assaults. Plus now anyone attending a drunken party could have a gun, which increases the likelihood of a bloodletting at the party.

As an alternative suggestion for prevention of rape, I am sharing from Facebook:

StopRape

So I’m just sayin’. The solution to rape on campus is not arming women students. The solution is for male students to stop raping. I can’t make it any simpler than this.
