Promoting Clergy Ethics in Historically Black Theological Schools

2011 Seminary Project Think Tank

SEATTLE, WA--With funding from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, FaithTrust Institute will host a think tank on Historically Black Theological Schools' Professional Ethics and Healthy Boundaries in Ministry, as part of its annual Seminary Project.

Participants will gather January 3-4, 2011, at Shaw Divinity School in Raleigh, North Carolina, to:

  • Identify the emerging issues in preventing clergy sexual misconduct in the Black church
  • Discuss the progress in integrating healthy boundaries into theological education
  • Evaluate effectiveness of FaithTrust Institute materials with Black seminarians
  • Determine the future work of professional misconduct policies in Black seminaries

Led by Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune, Rev. Dr. Sharon Ellis Davis, and Rev. K. Ray Hill, the 2011 Seminary Project will include faculty and administrators from Hood Theological Seminary, Howard University School of Divinity, Shaw University School of Divinity, Louisville Presbyterian Theology Seminary, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University.

About the Seminary Project

Funded by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation since 1996, the Seminary Project is an annual event that promotes clergy ethics and the prevention of ministerial sexual abuse through theological education. Each year FaithTrust Institute brings faculty and administrators together from theological schools throughout the United States and Canada to experience the Professional Ethics & Healthy Boundaries in Ministry curriculum and to discuss its application to the professional formation of seminarians and faith community leaders. Over 150 faculty and administrators from over 60 theological schools have participated in the Seminary Project.
