The United Church of Christ (UCC), in collaboration with FaithTrust Institute, has created a discussion guide to address the serious issues for UCC faith communities raised by the movie Spotlight.

The film follows the investigative reporting team at The Boston Globe and shows how the reporters uncovered the institutional denial and secrecy that protected hundreds of child molesters within the Archdiocese of Boston, for decades.

While the film focuses on the Catholic Church in Boston, the story is not uniquely Catholic. Every faith community has, knowingly or unknowingly, had to weigh the "value" of institutional protection versus the needs of victims for justice, restitution, and justice.

We applaud the UCC for offering this discussion guide to foster more discussion about the needs for prevention of sexual abuse, and ways for all of us to ensure accountability.

FaithTrust Institute will be offering an Round Table Webinar in April (date TBA) to discuss and expand upon the issues raised by Spotlight for all faith communities, and ways to use the film to further our conversations about preventing abuse and responding faithfully to victims and survivors. Check back for the date!
